In November I was honored to present at the 2023 Global Development Finance Conference! Wow, what an incredible conference with some amazing speakers 🙏🏼. It was so interesting to listen and learn from them. The theme of the conference was: Innovative research in sustainable finance.I presented my paper, written with my supervisors Ms A de Vries and Prof S Viviers, on the recent trends in earnings management and the possible consequences for firms and stakeholders. Earnings management refers to the misrepresentation or manipulation of financial performance, intentionally misleading stakeholders with overly-optimistic financial reporting. The outcomes of this paper were uncovered during my MCom thesis writing. To sum up my presentation, ‘Earnings management: Is there cause for concern?’ Our findings pointed to… it seems so, yes 🫣. We uncovered recent increased trends in earnings managemet, with a notably large increase post-Covid19!*These findings could be rather scary for stakeholders, especially investors who make their investment decisions based on reported results. The conclusions of the study are further explored in my thesis, which I am excited to soon share some more outcomes of! *All results mentioned were significant at p=<0,001.
