Stars of a Thief Tall Tale Journals, Locations and Text - Rare Thief (2024)

Thick as thieves, indeed. Bonding over a mutual reverence for wisdom in the stars, Briggsy and Sudds shared a friendship coded in astrological allusions.

The journals for Stars of a Thief take the form of Sudds’ notes, most of which tell stories of the stars.

Here you’ll find the locations and text for each Journal in The Cursed Rogue.

The locations will help guide you to each of Sudds’ notes, perhaps haphazardly left throughout the Sea of Thieves by this absent-minded professor.

Ah, but do Sudds’ writings evince the echoes of an astute observer, deriving deep insights as he puzzles through the heavens? Or, do Sudds’ writings display the ramblings of a mind addled by the the sea?

It may be too soon to tell, but we think the text of these writings might seem rather prescient in the future.

For now, you’re likely pursuing that commendation for simply finding all five journals—text inside be damned. Although we’re not celestial beings, we’ll do our best to help you navigate.

Remember:

These journals appear only if the Stars of a Thief Tall Tale is active!

So, before you scour the seas for Sudds’ notes, pay the old fellow a visit.

He’ll be muttering and tinkering about on The North Star Seapost. There among his charts and instruments, you’ll see the Tall Tale book. Vote and set sail!

The Location for the Stars of a Thief Journal #1

Located on a small island and clearly marked with Sudds’ charts and instruments, this is perhaps one of the easiest journals to find. Splendid!

Head to Rum Runner Isle. The journal is on the Northeast islet, next to the spyglass.

The Location for the Stars of a Thief Journal #2

This journal in on Plunder Valley. As a rather large island, finding such a small item might seem a bit daunting. Luckily, once you know where it is, it’s rather easy to spot.

It’s on the highest peak!

Do you remember the Festival of the Damned? Just below that beacon, you’ll see where someone made a perfect perch for stargazing. You’ll also find the journal.

Happily, we filmed a little snippet on climbing up to this beacon for the Festival of the Damned. This link will take you right to the Plunder Valley snippet of the video.

Of course, this was pre-Tall Tales. So, Sudds had not yet frequented this spot…

Head to that large central island, and make your way to the top.

Walk along the Northeast cliffs. Soon you’ll see a humble little spot to sit and take in the stars. It’s also a nice little spot for some reading.

You’ll find this journal on Devil’s Ridge.

Like Plunder Valley, it seems someone has tried to get as close to the stars as possible. The journal is on the highest peak, on the North side of the island.

Also like Plunder Valley, there is a Festival of the Damned beacon nearby. As such, we have a little video snippet showing you how to quickly make your way up.

While our video snippet will help you quickly reach the beacon, you will then need to do some rock climbing to reach the charts, spyglass, and journal.

We’ve found it easiest to clamber our way back along the rocks in the picture below (southward), until we get to a point where we can jump up to the level that will lead to the peak.

The Text for the Stars of a Thief Journal #1

This journal is titled, “The North Star Guides You”

It reads:

Sudds met a young whippersnapper today. Green as leaves, he was. He hadn’t even heard of the North Star!

You don’t need no spyglass to find her, Sudds told the lad, she’s the biggest and brightest friend and she likes to stay put.

Spot the North Star and you’ll never need a compass again! And the boy smiled, and asked Sudds: “What if it’s raining?”

Sudds gave the lad a thick ear. Busy, too busy for foolish questions! Gots to reach ol’ Plunder by nightfall…

The Text for the Stars of a Thief Journal #2

This journal is titled, “The Little Glimmer Fish”

It reads:

Brave little Glimmer Fish…. He used to swim down here in the water with all of his brothers and sisters, shining in the sun.

Sometimes it’s not wise to shine too brightly… Bigger fish came with empty bellies, and their teeth went snicker-snack!

Soon Glimmer Fish was the only one left to guide the ancient ones on their journey here. One brave little light, all alone…

The ancients felt sorry for Glimmer Fish and placed him in the heavens where he could swim in safety. Lucky little fishy!

Now Sudds must swim along too, all the way to the shores named after the sneaky snake…

The Text for the Stars of a Thief Journal #3

This journal is titled, “Snake Gets What He Deserves”

It reads:

Snake has many voices and likes to play tricks. He coiled along a branch and waited until the Great Warrior was near.

“Help me!” came the Sea Queen’s cry, “Won’t someone help me, for wicked One-Eye has me by the tail!” Warrior heard it all.

Warrior ran through the trees, not looking up above his head, and whump! There came Singing Snake to coil around his throat.

Snake is cunning, but Warrior is strong! He grabbed at Snake and hurled him up into the stars, where he has lived ever since!

Sudds can’t get a good view from here. Needs to sail out to Old Harry’s place before daybreak…

The Text for the Stars of a Thief Journal #4

This journal is titled, “The War that Shook the Sky”

It reads:

There was once a great battle that shook the whole heavens, and caused great sadness to Sudds’s friends above.

Great Warrior knew that he would have to battle Old Kraken, for she planned to feast on the merfolk and their kin.

To fletch the arrows he would need, Warrior told Proud Eagle to give up eight of his feathers, or they would go to war.

Eagle refused, of course, and tore at Warrior with his sharp talons, but it was no use. Warrior fled with his golden prizes!

He dropped one feather as he fell back to earth, and it’s still in the stars! Sudds wants to see it from the moon-shaped isle…

The Text for the Stars of a Thief Journal #3

This journal is titled, “The Binding of the Kraken”

It reads:

Great Warrior took his arrows and went to make war with Kraken, but he had lost a feather along the way.

He thought of Singing Snake and the venom it used to bite, and he tipped each of his arrows with the very same.

The arrows stung the Old Mother and made her sleepy, so that she sank down to the sea bed. Warrior gave out a great cry.

The ancients came, then, with their great chains. Together they bound Kraken rightly to the star above, far out of reach.

The Sea Queen was grateful, for her people were saved, and she promised they would always help those lost at sea.
