Cape Shirreff’s Holt Watters Field Camp has won an Architizer A+Award in the Sustainable Institutional Building category! The 2000 sf Holt Watters Field Camp was conceived to replace the deteriorating structures. Three buildings comprise the main campus; the fourth, a remote penguin research facility, is a short one-mile hike away. The remoteness of the field station, which is only accessible by zodiac, required a pre-fabricated, lightweight, highly insulated, and nearly maintenance-free building solution. One that could be pre-fabricated offsite and reassembled in less than two months during Antarctica’s austral summer. The Architizer A+Awards is the largest awards program focused on promoting and celebrating the year's best architecture and spaces. Its mission is to nurture the appreciation of meaningful architecture in the world and champion those designers that are integral to bringing great buildings to life. The project was a collaboration between students and faculty from the University of Colorado Denver’s Colorado Building Workshop, acting as architect and prefabrication contractors, and Bespoke Project Solutions, who oversaw the construction both in Denver and Antarctica. As KL&A celebrates its 30th Anniversary in 2024, we are looking back and highlighting 30 influential projects in our history. The biology building at Colorado State University comprises 152,000 gsf in four stories and includes classroom and biology research facilities. The building also includes an auditorium style lecture hall, computer labs for students, general teaching and research labs, offices for faculty and graduate students, a large aquarium and an impressive exterior grand stair.KL&A provided integrated services on this LEED Gold certified building, including structural engineering, steel construction management, and steel detailing. It was also the first of a series of projects completed with Hord Coplan Macht, KL&A, and Haselden Construction. Since this highly collaborative project, the same team has gone on to complete multiple buildings on CSU’s campus, and across other higher education institutions. The high collaboration of these teams allowed us to achieve an expedited schedule, working together from an early stage to create an integrated pull plan with the general contractor, owner, architect & consultants all in the same room. As a large portion of KL&A are alumni of CSU, this project is particularly influential to many of KL&A’s employees for the direct ties to the campus. KL&A has completed multiple buildings on the campus, which is particularly rewarding, allowing alumni to use the education they received, and give it back to the institution they hold dear. This project and many others completed in higher education are rewarding for the longevity of the projects, and the amount of influence they give. As KL&A celebrates its 30th Anniversary in 2024, we are looking back and highlighting 30 influential projects in our history.The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument and The Archway Museum is a historical attraction showcasing exhibits, a shop, theater, and event space housed within a distinctive structure spanning I-80 in Kearney, Nebraska. The museum is situated above a four lane highway that sees thousands of cars every day, commemorating the journeys of all adventurers who have traveled the river’s route – from those who contributed to our nation’s development in the past to those who are shaping our future today.The construction of the Archway monument demonstrated impressive engineering and problem-solving skills. KL&A faced the challenge of erecting a 1,500-ton structure above a busy highway without disrupting traffic flow, that acted like a bridge as well as a museum occupied by numerous people. The SDS2 model was utilized for the majority of the project, a monumental tool used to visualize and understand the steel detailing of the building, a modeling tool that KL&A still uses to this day. The most complex part of the project involved lifting the arch section 22.5 feet into the air, then slowly pulling the building across the highway, connected by two supporting towers on either side of the highway – an event that nearly all of KL&A’s staff at the time were able to witness. Influential to KL&A for the amount of knowledge gained from the project. As one of KL&A’s first structural design & detailing integrated projects, we had to grow internally to discuss changes made in design and how the could efficiently be completed – a process made simpler since both departments were in the same building. This was also one of the first projects for KL&A where the detailers were in a coordination meeting with the architect early on in the process, this helped learn what was truly important to the project and identify problems that needed solving early on. Through multiple scope changes during the project, coordination and collaboration of the various design teams is what was key to a successful project. A true landmark to anyone who has driven across Nebraska, dedicated to the pioneers who traveled the Great Platte River Road and played a role in the development of America, keeping Kearney, Nebraska on the map throughout American history.Project Team: 4240 Architecture, , Kiewit

Small field teams have been monitoring the Antarctic peninsula ecosystem for more than 30 years, living and studying at rustic field camps. In partnership with COLORADO BUILDING WORKSHOP at University of Colorado Denver, OZ Architecture, Bespoke Project Solutions, and , new facilities were designed and constructed at the new Holt-Watters field camp in Cape Shirreff, Antarctica.
