Utilizing records and eyewitness accounts, this wonderful little book paints a comprehensive depiction of the whole family. One learns, for example, that Gustav's sons, Herbert and Horst, were deeply loved by all. Both mastered music early on and both pursued professional careers. Er war einer der reichsten Männer der Welt und vielleicht ihr infamster Verbrecher. Das von ihm beherrschte Medellín-Kartell lieferte 50 Prozent des in den USA konsumierten Kokains, und die Drogenmilliarden machten Escobar zum mächtigsten Mann Kolumbiens. Doch seine maßlose Gewalt wurde ihm zum Verhängnis. Um der drohenden Auslieferung an die USA zu entgehen, erklärte Pablo dem kolumbianischen Staat den Krieg. Wer sich nicht kaufen ließ, wurde ermordet. Hunderte Richter, Polizisten und Politiker, darunter drei Präsidentschaftskandidaten, fielen seinem Terror zum Opfer. Allein der Bombenanschlag auf eine Linienmaschine der Avianca kostete 110 Menschenleben. Escobar war damit zum meistgefürchteten Terroristen der Welt geworden. Man musste ihn stoppen, egal wie. Was folgte, war die größte Menschenjagd aller Zeiten, unterstützt von der CIA, der Anti-Drogenbehörde DEA und von Spezialverbänden der US-Armee. Am "erfolgreichsten" war jedoch eine ominöse Todesschwadron namens "Los Pepes", deren Mitglieder damit prahlten, mindestens 300 Handlanger des Drogenbarons ermordet zu haben. Am 2. Dezember 1993 war schließlich auch Pablos Flucht zu Ende. Nach offiziellen Angaben wurde er bei einem Schusswechsel mit der Polizei getötet, doch sind die genauen Todesumstände bis heute umstritten. "Killing Pablo" beschreibt erstmals das volle Ausmaß des geheimen US-Engagements in Kolumbien. Bei seinen Recherchen stieß Mark Bowden zudem auf brisantes Material, das die tiefe Verstrickung der USA in den Terror von Los Pepes beweist.
