angels & demons [Chronological order Good Omens Playlist] - Chapter 1 - littlehighlittlelow (2024)

  • Blame It on Me - George Ezra

The garden was blessed by the Gods of me and you. We headed West to find ourselves some truth

Leaving the Garden, exploring the world.

  • Missed Connection - The Head and the Heart

First you see it, then you feel it, now I'm caught and we're making our own thing. Now I'm following you out to the coast”Early days, finding each other in the world, starting to seek the other out.
(Black robes are similar to a purple dress?)

  • Demons - Imagine Dragons

the saints we see are all made of gold” gives a good timeframe of around the Ark (3004 BC).
Crowley still talks about his Fall in modern times, so I think the early years would be hard for him.

“When your dreams all fail and the ones we hail are the worst of all
“Not the kids? You can’t kill kids.”
    ”Mmhmm.”
    Aziraphale’s doubt of Heaven continues.

  • Overjoyed - Bastille

These words are all we have” perfectly sums up their relationship. Even calling themselves friends isn’t allowed, but they like talking to each other. They want each other’s company.

I hear you calling in the dead of night” I imagine two immortal beings can somehow sense each other and that’s how Crowley always pops up in time to save Aziraphale over the years.

  • Like the Dawn - The Oh Hellos

I was sleeping in the garden when I saw you first. He'd put me deep, deep under so that He could work. And like the dawn you broke the dark and my whole earth shook
Crowley reflecting on their time together and growing feelings. Despite the danger, I think he knows how far gone he is for Aziraphale already.
and you will surely be the death of me, but how could I have known?

Truly one of my favorite songs on the entire list, it’s beautiful.

  • Guiding Light - Mumford & Sons

All day permanent red, the glaze on my eyes. When I heard your voice, the distance caught me by surprise again
41 AD, Their meeting in Rome. Crowley disgusted by Caligula, and Aziraphale surprising him in the tavern.

But don't just slip away in the night, don't just hurl your words from on high. Well I know I had it all on the line, but don't just sit with folded hands and become blind.”
    More of their conversations.

  • Heartbeats - José González

One night to be confused, One night to speed up truth, We had a promise bade, Four hands and then away
So, whether you prefer they hold hands or kiss or more, this is when they know for certain what they mean to each other. I imagine them still in Rome but it could be anytime from then until the Arrangement.

To call for hands of Above to lean on, wouldn't be good enough for me, no
Aziraphale knows Heaven is not where his heart is.

  • Catch The Wind - Oliver Daldry

Oh we were never meant to win, how I even thought to think it, Now it's beating at my limbs, I'll never catch the wind. Just raise a glass, my dear, my love, every time you think of us
And the inevitable panic and worry, Aziraphale knowing they can’t continue.

  • Before I Let You Go - Kaina

We bleed the hours and years go by, As our lives go on and on, so our love goes on and on.

They keep their distance but of course they miss each other.

  • Waking Up Slow (Piano Version) - Gabrielle Aplin

I could be your friend, But I'm unprepared. Oh, I've never felt like this. I was unaware, You were lighting flares, Now I'm running scared

    (537 AD)
AZIRAPHALE: No! Absolutely not! I am shocked that you would even imply such a thing. We are not even having this conversation. Not another word.
    CROWLEY (disappointed): Right.

  • Arms - Christina Perri

How many times will let you me change my mind and turn around? I can't decide if I'll let you save my life or if I'll drown. I hope that you see right through my walls, I hope that you catch me, 'cause I'm already falling

  • Can’t Help Falling in Love - Haley Reinhart (covering Elvis Presley)

1020 AD, The Arrangement - Because I’m a sap and it’s a lovely cover. They’re in love. They know it. They’re not denying it (privately to each other) anymore.

  • The End of All Things - Panic! At The Disco

Whether near or far, I am always yours. … In these coming years many things will change, But the way I feel will remain the same
  • I Walk The Line - Avila (covering Johnny Cash)

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine, I keep my eyes wide open all the time, I keep the ends out for the tie that binds. Because you're mine, I walk the line
Publicly of course they must be careful and assume they’re always being watched.

I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day is through
Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you

“Age does not wither nor custom stale his infinite variety.” (1601 AD)

  • Everything - Hailey Gardiner

And we'll keep traveling on, When the nights are lonely, Following your heart like a beating drum

  • Thousand - Horse Feathers

A kiss that's not refused, A promise that wasn't true. Please don't stop or refrain, As caution would course through our brains, We know to this there's no rules, A love that suffers no fools.”

So by the time we see them in Paris in 1793, clearly things have relaxed between them. I think the show was written in a way to please fans on both sides of the sex question, suggesting there’s more between them but leaving it up to us to decide if they do take it further behind closed doors. Either way you see them, I don’t think it changes the fact: that angel was FLIRTING. Just like we see him do again at the Ritz when they get together to discuss Armageddon. They’ve been careful earlier, but they haven’t been troubled by their head offices for a while, and Aziraphale has been letting his reserves down a little too much. “Barely counts as a miracle, really…” “Dressed like that, he’s asking for trouble.” Which of course means…

  • Polar Bears And Shark Fins - The Myriad

…they’re unprepared for a surprise visit from Gabriel and Sandalphon in 1800. This is a deleted scene from the script book (but the song could also work for 1827 in Edinburgh in Season 2), so if you haven’t read it: opening day of Aziraphale’s bookshop Crowley shows up with chocolates as Gabriel is telling Aziraphale he’s been reassigned and is going back to Heaven. Aziraphale gushes about how clever and wily Crowley is to a suspicious Gabriel. “It almost sounds like you like him.”
Crowley quickly comes up with a plan to make it clear Aziraphale is needed on earth to continue thwarting his evil adversary.

Did you forget to read the signs? Sharks are creeping in today …Wouldn't it be nice, If we could ignore all the signs for just one day, If we could break all of the rules for just one day

If you listen closely at the end there’s a little shuddery exhale that I love. They’re okay, they’re together, but they just barely missed a disaster.

  • Torch Song - Shady Bard

1862, St. James Park - holy water argument.
What a time to pick a fight

  • Everything Will Be Alright - The Killers

The book says Crowley slept through most of the 19th century, which doesn’t really work with what we see in the show, but there’s 79 years between 1862 and 1941, so maybe he slept through most of that after their fight.
The lyrics don’t make a lot of sense (but maybe they could be Crowley dreaming). I’ve always decided to keep it anyway because it was one of the first songs I had on this playlist and I love how soft and dreamlike it is.

  • Only You - Matthew Perryman Jones

Aziraphale goes to Gentlemen’s Clubs, learns the gavotte, (maybe makes friends with Oscar Wilde) and misses Crowley.

I can start it over and find somebody new, A beautiful distraction, Just a hand to hold on to. But if you ask me, Would that love be true? No, I want you, Only you…
  • Auld Lang Syne - Ingrid Michaelson

I love this song for them. It’s been around since at least 1799, so they would have had opportunities to hear it together and I’m sure it would be a poignant reminder if either of them heard it while they’re separated. Also the Blitz was from 7 September 1940 – 11 May 1941, so even though we don’t have an exact date for that reunion, the time of year is relatively close that they’d have heard it played recently around New Years.

  • Song of the Century - Green Day

I love this little 1 minute song so much. Radio static, candlelight, bombs and stories. Love, love, love the transition it gives.

Sing us a song of the century
That's louder than bombs and eternity
The era of static and contraband
That's leading us into the promised land
Tell us a story that's by candlelight
Waging a war and losing the fight
They're playing our song of the century
Of panic and promise and prosperity
Tell me a story into that goodnight
Sing us a song for me.

  • Oh Love - Green Day

    “Lift home?”

Oh love, won't you rain on me tonight? Oh life, please don't pass me by. Don't stop, don’t stop when the red lights flash … Waste away tonight, Tonight my heart's on the loose
(traffic lights were first used in London in 1868!)
So I’ve gone back and forth including this song a few times and it’s just a darling I can’t kill. The transition for the next song isn’t as smooth as I would like, and the heavy electric guitars sometimes feel out of place but I think it captures Aziraphale’s excitement and feelings at seeing Crowley again so perfectly. (And Crowley’s too if he was more open with them).

Won't you see the light of day?
Reminder that Neil said in an ask they spent “several days” (and therefore at least a couple nights) together after the church scene!

  • The Way You Look Tonight - Peggy Lee (The Capital Transcriptions 1946-1949)

After the excitement settles down and they’re in the bookshop, sharing wine by candlelight, maybe the radio is playing. I loved this song so much for them I wrote a little drabble for it, it’s in my other works if you’re interested.

The original is from 1936, I think of it as Crowley’s POV.

With each word your tenderness grows, tearing my fear apart. And that laugh that wrinkles your nose, touches my foolish heart. Lovely, never never change, Keep that breathless charm, Won't you please arrange it? ‘Cause I love you just the way you look tonight

  • I’ll Be Seeing You - Cat Power

    I'll be seeing you,
All the old familiar places, This heart of mine embraces allday through. In the small café, In the park across the way…

This song is originally from 1938 and I love that it’s a promise to remember your love even if you have to be separate. They’re still cautious, but I think Crowley will always be close by from now on.
Mayfair, I recently found out, is a 5! Minute! Drive! to Soho. So yeah. Separate but close.
(And just a related info, there is an additional opening left out of some versions of A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square that starts with “When two lovers meet in Mayfair, so the legends tell”. I didn’t include Nightingales on this list but I was very happy when I found that out.)
  • Midnight City - M83

1967, neon lights and a conversation in a car.

A little meta, because I’d love some opinions about it: Neil has been asked before to explain “You go too fast for me, Crowley” but didn’t give a definitive answer. I know it’s mostly thought of as a love confession, but I can’t help wondering if Aziraphale could be saying you’re too reckless with your life.
“I work in Soho, I hear things.” If Aziraphale heard of Crowley’s plan, could Hell have found out too? What would they have done to him if they had? What if the humans got the holy water on him and he was destroyed? Aziraphale gives him “the holiest”, so does that mean there’s different strengths? What if human holy water isn’t effective against real demons and it might not work when he needed it? Crowley forced his hand setting this up, and Aziraphale was upset with him because of it. It’s not as romantic, but I do wonder about it.

  • Change Your Mind - The Killers

Racy days help me through the hopeless haze
We don’t get to see how they interact from 1967 until the baby swap, but I like this song as a bridge.

  • Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

For obvious reasons. The start of things.
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me, for me, for me.
  • This is not the end - The Bravery

Tell me, what does it mean to exist? … You'll always be close to me, my friend. This is not the end.

I like the general vibe of this song to represent Crowley’s optimism that they will stop the Earth from being destroyed and their conversation about what they’ll lose if it is.
  • Perfect - The Myriad (covering The Smashing Pumpkins)

I picked the cover mostly for the intro and how it transitions from the previous song, but the original of course is fantastic.

Angel, you know it's not the end, We'll always be good friends. The letters have been sent on. So please, you always were so free. You'll see, I promise we'll be perfect. Perfect strangers when we meet, Strangers on the street, Lovers while we sleep
After the Ritz at the bookshop.

  • Killer Queen - Queen

Hello, Nanny. I love the idea of the Bentley playing this every time Crowley is dressed as Ashtoreth. Of course you can’t go wrong with a Queen song.

Perfume came naturally from Paris (naturally), For cars she couldn't care less, Fastidious and precise

  • Waiting for the End of the World - Elvis Costello

The clock is ticking. 11 years to go.
The title is the only lyric that means anything, but the sound is great.
  • Four Rusted Horses - Marilyn Manson

The Four Horsem*n are called. Again, the lyrics leave much to be desired (I don’t really understand most of them) but I love the sound of this song to represent them.

Forbidden in Heaven and useless in Hell” is great and “Four rusted horses strangled by their own rope” will be appropriate.

  • Last of the American Girls - Green Day

    Fantastic song for Anathema.

She's got her little book of conspiracies right in her hand, She is paranoid like endangered species headed into extinction, She is one of a kind, She's the last of the American girls. She wears her overcoat for the coming of the nuclear winter, She is riding her bike like a fugitive of critical mass
  • Ship to Wreck - Florence + the Machine

I can't help but pull the earth around me, to make my bed

Adam dreams, and the world changes. The rest of the lyrics don’t make sense for him, but I think the song represents it great. New Aquarians and the kraken awakens.

  • Bad Moon Rising - Creedence Clearwater Revival

Weather and things in general are getting worse as Adam’s power grows.
I hope you got your things together, I hope you are quite prepared to die, Look's like we're in for nasty weather, One eye is taken for an eye
  • Stuck In A Glass Elevator - The Myriad

If we run, we just might find that There's a way to get out of this place, If we run, we just might find that There's a way, that there's a way, To get out…

“But we can run away together. Alpha Centauri!”

  • Holy Roller - AWOLNATION

Hold your head up high, everyone can see, Not afraid that I need your love
    They argue in the street,

    Holy roller, blow me over
“I forgive you”, Crowley storms off

It's a cold, cold brutal world
and it’s the last time Crowley sees Aziraphale…

  • How Far We’ve Come - Matchbox Twenty

So in the book Crowley heads straight for Tadfield after seeing the bookshop burning and taking the book. In the show he is hopeless after losing Aziraphale and goes to the pub. I think this song does a good job combining both of those reactions.

I think it turned ten o' clock, but I don't really know, And I can't remember caring for an hour or so, Started crying and I couldn't stop myself, I started running but there's nowhere to run to. I sat down on the street, took a look at myself, Said Where you going man, you know the world is headed for hell? Say your goodbyes if you got someone you can say goodbye to

  • Lampshades on Fire - Modest Mouse

Well the lampshade's on fire when the lights go out, The room lit up and we ran about. Well this is what I really call a party now, Packed up our cars, moved to the next town

Lots of confusion going on, the Bentley on fire, everyone getting desperate, Anathema looking for the book, Adam being weird saying let’s just chuck this world and start over…

  • Emperor’s New Clothes - Panic! at the Disco

    Adam coming into his powers..…
  • Laughter Lines - Bastille

.....and realizing he doesn’t really want them if his friends don’t like him anymore.

I like the “Finders keepers, losers weepers” from the last song and “Cross my heart and hope to die” in this one since a lot of people would recognize them from childhood. I feel like it links them a little bit.I'll see you in the future when we're older, And we are full of stories to be told. Cross my heart and hope to die, I'll see you with your laughter lines. Ashen faces in cold breeze, Ashen faces in cold breeze, All the stories you will leave.

  • The Kids from Yesterday - My Chemical Romance

Well now this could be the last of all the rides we take, So hold on tight and don't look back.
We don't care about the message or the rules they make

    The Them.

  • Shake It Out - Florence + The Machine

    Regrets collect like old friends,
Here to relive your darkest moments, I can see no way, I can see no way. And all of the ghouls come out to play, And every demon wants his pound of flesh … And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back, So shake him off

“You’re not my dad. You never were.”

  • Walk Me Home - P!nk

And darling, I know it's getting late,
So what do you say we leave this place? Walk me home in the dead of night, I can't be alone with all that's on my mind, So say you'll stay with me tonight, 'Cause there is so much wrong going on outside, There's something in the way I wanna cry, That makes me think we'll make it out alive

“You can stay at my place, if you like.”

  • Come Away With Me - Norah Jones

Come away with me in the night,
Come away with me, And I will write you a song, Come away with me on a bus, Come away where they can't tempt us with their lies
  • You’re All I Have - Snow Patrol

Train this chaos, turn it into light,
I've gotta see you one last night, Before the lions take their share, Leave us in pieces, scattered everywhere
  • The Fall - Imagine Dragons

    When everything
    Comes crashing down
    You're all I know
    You're all I know
    I'm ready for the fall
I'm ready for everything that I believed in to
    Drift away

I think Aziraphale hasn’t been aligned with Heaven for a very long time but he always hoped they could be better than they are. It was a popular trope in fics for awhile that having blatantly defied Heaven, he would now Fall or at least have a fear he would. I like this song because he’s ready for whatever comes next.

  • Trampoline - Shaed

    Flames alight the trees,
Spread to fallin' leaves, Now they're right upon me.
Wait if I'm on fire, how am I so deep in love? When I dream of dying, I never feel so loved.
I've been having dreams, Splashin' in a summer stream. Trip and I fall in, I wanted it to happen.
My body turns to ice, Crushin' weight of paradise. Solid block of gold, Lying in the cold, I feel right at home

    “Choose your faces wisely.”

  • All Over Again - The Last Royals

Let’s call in all our favors in the final hour,
And throw in all our chips along the way. Is this the last straw, Is this the ninth life, my friend? … You wonder what it was She was accomplishing
They survive. Maybe with some Ineffable help? (Also I just realized CHIPS as in poker, I can’t believe I never realized—)

    Let’s fall in love
    All over again
And if it’s love that you want
Just tell me the where and the when
“Temp you to a spot of lunch?”

  • Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy - Queen“The first day of the rest of their lives” I imagine will look a lot like many that will follow. Dining at the Ritz and going romancing.
  • From here it’s self indulgent fluff but I highly recommend the ones with asterisks*** especially. Most of these songs are basically retelling their story but I didn’t feel they fit into the above order. I don’t plan to add any more until we get the final ending, but some of them could represent Season 2 and maybe even Season 3 well enough for now.

    52. Lover - Kyle Andrews

    53. This Is Love - Tim Myers

Our love will last the end of time
    Our souls are perfectly entwined
I searched the world to find
There's no one else but you...

    54. Home - Halcyon Skies

    55. Better Than - Kaina

Long before it all got started
It was only me and you
    Oh I never could’ve known

All that we would go through

    56. Sinners - Lauren Aquilina

    57. Come With Me - Chxrlotte
    (literally written about them)

    58. Waves - Kathryn Ostenberg

    59. Stand by You - Rachel Platten

    60. I Wouldn't Mind - He Is We

    61. *** Come Rain, Come Shine - Ivan & Alyosha

I will remind you, and you will me
Yeah I'll come and find you
    Come rain
    Come shine
I am yours and you are mine

    62. Lift - Zerbin

    63. October: Written in the Stars - Tim Myers

I fell in with every word
Every smile helped me learn that its worth it to feel this close

And the strength of letting go
Do you know that our love is written in the stars?
Do you think that it’s fate, the way that we are?

    64. Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol

    65. Halo (Acoustic Version) - Madilyn Bailey covering Beyoncé

    68. ****** I'll See Your Heart & I'll Raise You Mine - Bell X1What's with the angel?
    And what's with the devil?
    They keep swapping shoulders
I can't tell which from which
"Will you be my Kriskindle? Will you be my better nature?"
    Says one to the other
But I think they're only showing off
